Change Leadership is a key
requirement, and challenge, for most leaders today. As Business
Psychologists our expertise is very relevant to
effective change leadership. We work with organisations to develop
leaders' knowledge and skills in the following areas:
Communication - Effective leaders use
strong communication and interpersonal skills to make sure they receive,
and respond to, others' feedback. Less effective individuals often
over-use impersonal, one-way communication 'tools' - like email - with
the result that they do not attract the same level of commitment and
'buy-in'. Effective communication is tailored to meet different
needs and preferences
Involvement - Effective leaders know
that people respond better to change proposals that they have been
involved in creating. So strong leaders of change take the time
and effort to make sure that people impacted are properly consulted and
included throughout periods of change - they go beyond paying 'lip
service' to consultation.
The Change Curve - Effective leaders
understand the typical dynamics of human's experience of externally
imposed change and how best to support people at each stage of the
process.
Influence - Effective leaders make
good use of 'give and take' in their interactions with others.
They are prepared to be flexible and responsive, whilst remaining
focused on what needs to be achieved. And they understand the
different 'levers' that they can use to increase support for change, by
decreasing resistance and inertia and by increasing commitment and
'take-up'.
Sustainability - Effective leaders
implement changes that 'stick'. By doing all of the things listed
here, leaders are more likely to achieve sustainable changes in their
organisation, because of the deep commitment that they attract from
others.

"To be honest, I came to the workshop
thinking I was already a good change leader. I can see now
that I was often just pushing things through. I'm much
more focused now on using 'pull' to understand other people's
agendas, and it's really making a difference."
